The state-owned shipyard, the last commercial yard on the Clyde, said the cuts reflect a workload gap as MV Glen Rosa nears delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the four vessels promised in March still not under contract.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chief executive Graeme Thomson said the yard faces &#8220;an inevitable gap in workload while we work with the Scottish Government to make the relevant preparations to enable us to proceed with contract negotiations&#8221;. He said the reductions were intended to keep the yard &#8220;lean, modern, and ready to cut steel on the new fleet as quickly as possible&#8221;. Ferguson Marine said the consultation will not affect the Glen Rosa delivery schedule.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Scottish Government said in March it intended to award Ferguson Marine four vessels directly: two ferries for Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited, a marine protection vessel and a marine research vessel. Due diligence is still under way and engagement with the Competition and Markets Authority is required before any formal award. Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn described the redundancy scheme as &#8220;part of efforts to modernise the shipyard and put it on a more competitive footing&#8221; and said next steps would be announced to Parliament.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>GMB Scotland, the largest union at the yard, blamed ministers. Secretary Louise Gilmour said &#8220;skilled and experienced shipbuilders are being encouraged to leave as those in charge send contracts everywhere but here&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Martin McCluskey, Labour MP for Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West, told Daily Business that: &#8220;More than 1,500 jobs have now been lost in Inverclyde in just a few years.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ferguson Marine was taken into public ownership in December 2019.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ferguson Marine has opened formal consultation on up to 70 voluntary redundancies at its Port Glasgow yard, close to a quarter of a workforce of 283 that includes 34 apprentices.
